Registered as a Historic Site, Deoksugung Palace has a fascinating history!
Originally the home of Grand Prince Wolsan (1454-1488), the older brother of King Seongjong, it wasnโt initially a royal palace.
It wasnโt until 1593, after the royal residence was destroyed during the Imjin War, that Deoksugung became a temporary palace for the royal family. King Seonjo also took refuge here upon returning to the city.
The palace officially became a royal residence in 1611 when Gwanghaegun (1575-1641) named it Gyeongungung Palace. Over the years, it alternated between being an official palace and a temporary residence. It wasn't until 1907 that it was officially renamed Deoksugung Palace, meaning "palace of virtuous longevity."
Today, the palace grounds are a shadow of their former grandeur, with only a few structures remaining to tell the tale of its past splendor.
