Gyeongbokgung Palace, built in 1395, is a must-see for history buffs and culture lovers! This iconic palace was the official residence of the Joseon dynasty, founded by Yi Seong-gye, who later became King Taejo. It's often called the Northern Palace because it's located to the north, compared to Changdeokgung Palace in the east and Gyeonghuigung Palace in the west.

Of all the five palaces, Gyeongbokgung is arguably the most stunning and the largest.
Many Joseon kings were crowned here, making it a significant historical site. Though it was once destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (1592-1598), it was beautifully restored under King Gojongโ€™s reign thanks to Heungseondaewongun. Sadly, after the assassination of Empress Myeongseong, the palace lost its status as a royal residence and witnessed the end of the Joseon dynasty.

Today, Gyeongbokgung Palace still showcases incredible architecture, like the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and the picturesque Hyangwonjeong Pavilion with its serene pond.

The sculptures in Geunjeongjeon Hall are amazing examples of Joseon-era craftsmanship. Plus, you can explore more history at the National Palace Museum of Korea (west side) and the National Folk Museum of Korea (east side), both located within the palace grounds.
