“The number of foreign tourists visiting Seoul in the first half of 2024 recovered 91% of the pre-pandemic level, reaching 7.7 million, up 73.8% year-on-year.

In Seoul’s shopping districts, Myeongdong leads tourist spending, followed by Hongdae, Hannam, Seongsu, and Sinsa. This reflects the trend of tourists preferring local and trendy areas over traditional large retail stores.

Sales from May to July were 149 billion won in Myeongdong, 82.5 billion won in Hongdae, 23.7 billion won in Hannam and Itaewon, 21.8 billion won in Seongsu, and 18 billion won in Dosan and Garosu-gil. Myeongdong remains the area with the highest donations, especially in June, when the number of foreign visitors reached 95% of the pre-pandemic level.

Fashion is the top category driving sales, with visitors from China, Japan, Taiwan, the US, and Singapore contributing the most. Spending varies by region, with Dosan/Garosu-gil having the highest average transaction amount of around 300,000 won, and Myeongdong/Hongdae having the lowest at around 80,000-90,000 won. Nationality also affects spending, with Vietnamese and Indonesians generally spending more in Seongsu and Dosan/Garosu-gil.

Japanese tourists have higher transaction volumes than other nationalities, but their average spending is lower."
